Navigating Trade Tariffs
The Impact of Tariffs on Canadian Women Entrepreneurs
Tensions between Canada and the United States have escalated due to new trade measures. As of March 2025, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on most Canadian imports, with a 10% tariff on Canadian oil and energy products. In response, Canada enacted retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, including food, beverages, apparel, and household items.
These measures are expected to disrupt supply chains and increase costs for many businesses. While goods that qualify under the USMCA remain exempt, uncertainty around future trade negotiations continues.
The Canadian government has expressed strong opposition and signaled readiness to introduce additional countermeasures if needed. Formal negotiations between the two countries are expected to begin after Canada’s federal election in late April.
At Alberta Women Entrepreneurs, we are closely monitoring this evolving situation and remain committed to providing women entrepreneurs with the latest updates, practical resources, and personalized support to help navigate trade disruptions with confidence.
A recent survey by Startup Canada revealed that 84% of respondents identified as women, with the top concerns being rising operational costs and supply chain uncertainties. We understand these challenges and are dedicated to providing the necessary resources and support to help women entrepreneurs navigate this evolving landscape. - Updated April 7, 2025
